From its picturesque pastel-colored buildings to its lively markets and friendly locals, Willemstad offers an immersive experience that will satisfy the wanderlust in any traveler. My husband and I flew into the island the day before our Sandals Resorts visit and we are so glad that we did.
In May 2024, my husband and I planned a trip to Sandals Royal Curaçao, and we decided we wanted to avoid the stress of missing our connection. We decided to fly in the night before our resort arrival date, and spend some time exploring the local area.

Queen Emma Bridge: Most Famous Local Spot In Willemstad Curaçao
Affectionately known as the “Swinging Old Lady,” the Queen Emma Bridge is a pontoon bridge that connects the Punda and Otrobanda districts. It’s a must-see, offering stunning views of the waterfront. Don’t miss the chance to walk across it when it’s open to pedestrians
We also had the opportunity to take the water taxi from one side of the river to the other when it was open. It was a fun experience and one I highly recommend doing if you are given the opportunity. It was a great way to see the beautiful colored buildings that so makes Willemstad an amazing place to visit.
If you are there in the evening, take some time walking across the bridge and enjoy the lights lit up when the sun goes down. No matter what, this is probably the #1 on the list of local spots to visit in Willemstad Curaçao!
Local Spots In Willemstad Curaçao Includes The Punda Love Hearts
I have to say this is definitely my favorite activity we did when we were in town. Being part of the Sandals Resorts Facebook groups, I did a lot of research about the Punda Love Hearts and knew it was something I absolutely HAD to do.
About a year before our trip, I spent some time on Amazon looking at personalized locks. After much deliberation, I decided on this lock, and it turned out exactly how I wanted.
Once we were settled into our hotel, it was a short 5 minute walk to the Punda Love hearts where we “locked our love” for all eternity.
It was a really special way for us to celebrate our 27th wedding anniversary. And one that I won’t forget or hesitate to recommend to my clients.
