I look back and laugh at the time when I absolutely dreaded flying. It always made me nervous. But once hubs and I started traveling to the various Sandals Resorts, suddenly flying wasn’t so bad. I look forward to it now, and look forward to helping you with planning your holiday flying.
Planning Ahead Is Key To A Successful Day Of Holiday Flying
The Early Bird Gets the Best Deals
First things first, book early. Airlines often release their holiday schedules months in advance. The earlier you book, the better your chances of snagging a good deal. Experts suggest booking your holiday flights at least three months in advance. According to a survey by Expedia, the best time to book domestic flights is between two to three months before departure.
I have learned through experience to book my flights to a destination as soon as they are released to get the best prices. However, you are always subject to changes associated with early booking. I monitor my flights weekly, and update accordingly. Also, by booking early, I am able to get business class seats for the way down for maximum comfort.
Whatever method you choose, you can make your holiday flying more enjoyable by planning ahead for your vacation.
Flexibility is Key When It Comes To Holiday Flying
If your schedule allows, be flexible with your travel dates. Flying a day earlier or later than the peak days can save you a considerable amount of money and reduce stress. Use fare comparison tools like Google Flights or Skyscanner to find the best deals. Remember, a little flexibility can go a long way!

If you are tied into your dates, then planning ahead is essential. If your budget allows, see if you can fly in a few days earlier on a weekday.
Strategic Accommodation Booking
Don’t just stop at flights—book your accommodations early too. Popular destinations fill up quickly during the holidays. Websites like Booking.com and Airbnb offer great deals if you plan ahead. Look for refundable options to keep your plans adaptable.
Choose The Right Airline
When it comes to navigating the holiday travel rush, not all airlines are created equal. Do a bit of homework to find the airline that best fits your needs. Some airlines offer more flexible change policies, which can be a lifesaver if your plans shift unexpectedly. Additionally, consider the airline’s on-time performance and customer service reputation.
Websites like FlightStats and Skytrax provide detailed reviews and performance ratings that can help you make an informed choice. And don’t forget about loyalty programs—if you frequently travel with a particular airline, the rewards and perks could make a significant difference in your holiday experience.
Remember these tools are just a small part, and delays happen, no matter what airline. You are on!
Navigating the Airport
Arrive Early
Holiday travel means longer lines and more crowded spaces. Arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international ones. This gives you ample time to check in, pass through security, and maybe even grab a coffee before your flight.
I am a firm believer in being there early, even when it isn’t around a holiday or a busy time. I hate to be rushed, and I would rather sit at the gate and read than worry about missing my flight because lines are long and the airport is understaffed. And when you toss in holiday flying, getter there even earlier is key!

Security Made Simple
Security checks can be a major bottleneck during peak travel times. Make sure you understand the TSA guidelines to speed up the process. Remove laptops, liquids, and shoes as required. Wear easy-to-remove shoes and keep your ID and boarding pass handy.
Make the Most of Airport Amenities During Your Holiday Flying
Airports have come a long way in recent years. From yoga rooms and nap pods to gourmet dining and shopping, there’s plenty to do while you wait. Some airports even offer spa services. Explore the amenities online before you travel and make the most of your time.
Benefits of TSA Pre Check Especially With Holiday Flying
Skip the Long Lines
TSA Pre Check can be a lifesaver during holiday travel. For a fee of $85 for five years, you can skip the lengthy security lines. Keep your shoes, belts, and light jackets on, and leave your laptops and liquids in your bag. It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind.
Easy Application Process
Applying for TSA Pre Check is straightforward. Fill out an online application, schedule an appointment at an enrollment center, and attend a brief interview. Many travelers receive their Known Traveler Number (KTN) within a few weeks.
Real-Life Time Savers
We took it a step further and got Global Entry, which includes the TSA Pre Check. When you are at airports like Miami or Charlotte, it can definitely speed up the process. It isn’t foolproof, however, so getting to the airport early is your best bet.
In-Flight Comfort Helps To Make Holiday Flying More Enjoyable
Choose Your Seat Wisely
Not all seats are created equal. Use tools like SeatGuru to find the best seats on your flight. Opt for aisle seats for more legroom or exit rows for extra space. If you’re willing to splurge, consider upgrading to premium economy for added comfort.
Entertainment on the Go
Long flights can be tedious. Bring your own entertainment—download movies, books, or podcasts in advance. Noise-canceling headphones can be a lifesaver, drowning out the engine noise and chatty neighbors.
Comfort Essentials Make Holiday Flying Easier
Pack a travel pillow, blanket, and wear comfortable clothing. Staying hydrated is crucial too, so bring an empty water bottle to fill up after passing through security.

Dealing with Delays When Holiday Flying Is Involved
Stay Informed
Flight delays are a reality of holiday travel. Download your airline’s app to get real-time updates. Websites like FlightAware can also provide timely information about your flight status. I sign up for email and text alerts from my airline, and I also download the airport apps so I can track TSA wait times and any delays.
Manage Expectations With Holiday Flying
Set realistic expectations and prepare for delays. Keep essential items like medications, snacks, and chargers in your carry-on. A positive mindset goes a long way in managing travel stress. Know that delays will most likely happen no matter how carefully you plan.
Have some ear buds and some travel podcasts available to you. Delays seem a little less annoying when you are listening to resort reviews or food suggestions. If you are heading to Sandals Resorts, I highly recommend the Know Before You Go Travel Show podcast.
Make the Most of Extra Time
Use unexpected downtime to your advantage. Catch up on work, read a book, or explore the airport amenities we mentioned earlier. Some airports even offer day passes to their lounges, providing a quiet space with food, drinks, and Wi-Fi.
Check with your credit card to see if you qualify for free (or reduced) airport lounge access. A friend recently traveled and had a significant delay. Found out her business seat included access to the airline’s lounge and she and her husband had a comfortable place to rest until they finally boarded.
Book With a Travel Agent to Assist in Travel Delays With Holiday Flying
Expert Assistance
Travel agents can be invaluable during the holiday season. They can rebook flights, find alternative routes, and provide real-time assistance if delays occur. Their expertise can turn a potential travel nightmare into a manageable situation.
Personalized Service
A travel agent can tailor your trip to your preferences, ensuring a smoother travel experience. From selecting flights and accommodations to arranging car rentals, they handle the details so you don’t have to. I have 10 trips worth of knowledge from Sandals Resorts I can pass on when planning a trip.
Want to book your own flights? I can still help you out by talking through different options to help you make the best choice.

Peace of Mind
Knowing you have a professional on your side can bring peace of mind. Travel agents often have access to exclusive deals and perks that you won’t find online. Plus, their insider knowledge can save you both time and money.
And if you do get stuck, we can do our best to help out by getting on the phone with the airlines to save you time.
